In 2012 I started restoring the garden surrounding my wife’s family home in Co. Kilkenny.
The house and garden were constructed in 1810 on the banks of the River Nore just south of Kilkenny city. My challenges were many: limited horticultural knowledge, huge areas of lawn, many areas of untamed wilderness, trees felled by storms and limited structure in the garden were enduring challenges as I developed the bones of the garden. Since then I have reinvented the garden into one that has sensitively embraced the gardens previous history and has juxtaposed areas of modern planting that are richly evocative and create an interesting tension between old and new, contemporary and traditional.
This book tells the story of some of those challenges and the key themes that emerged during that time. The importance of sensitivity, sustainability and structure all come into play. Also important are the plants used to create the garden – why they were used, how they are combined and the effect they delivered.
155 pages, hardback, full colour. Published April 27th 2024.
